Statement on the Visit of Pope Francis in Canada
September 21, 2022
The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention voices its appreciation regarding the recent visit of Pope Francis in Canada as sign of apology and repentance regarding the egregious residential school system which killed thousands of Indigenous children and left thousands of others traumatized and suffering. We also want to emphasize that there is still much work to be done within the Roman Catholic Church to recognize and take responsibility for its involvement in supporting and justifying European expansionism, colonialism, slavery and genocide in the Americas.

September 18, 2022
The Lemkin Institute strongly condemns Azerbaijan's ongoing war of aggression against Armenia and its people. August 24, 2022
The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention wishes to call attention to the Melilla massacre of June 24, 2022 and to protest the externalization of Western borders and the securitization of migration and refugee crises that has become an increasingly lethal tendency among Western nations in the 21st century.

Statement on the Overturning of Roe v. Wade in the United States
August 19, 2022
The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention strongly condemns the recent decision of the United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS) to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling which established the constitutional right to abortion in the country. The recent 6-2 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overtuned the famous ruling — a dramatic and catastrophic setback for the fundamental human rights of women and of all people who can get pregnant, including non-binary people and trans men.

After almost 98 years, on May 19, 2022, the Truth Trial concluded with a conviction of the Argentine State as the main responsible party for the Napalpí Massacre.

Statement on the Ongoing Violence Against the Amhara People
June 20, 2022
The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention wishes to call attention to ongoing violence against the Amhara people in Ethiopia. More than 200 Amhara were massacred in Ethiopia's Oromia region this past Sunday, June 19, 2022. This is just the most recent example of targeted killings, rapes, and destruction of property that the Amhara people have experienced since the start of the current civil war.

In the wake of the apparent assassination of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh by Israel Defense Forces soldiers on the West Bank, the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention feels compelled to underscore the importance of a free press to the prevention of genocide, to accountability for mass atrocity crimes, and to the cause of sustainable global peace.

Updated Statement on Genocide in Ukraine
April 9, 2022
Given recent revelations of atrocity in Russian-occupied Ukraine, the Lemkin Institute wishes to underscore its conviction that Russia is committing genocide in Ukraine. In particular, reports of genocidal forms of rape, life force atrocities, mass deportations of Ukrainians to Russia, and the kidnapping and transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia are highly indicative of genocidal intent.

They have been taking to the streets since Thursday, February 24, despite the risks they face from police and the judiciary. They are being joined by Russian notables in journalism, entertainment, sports, and business, many of whom have posted against the war on social media.
