According to The Sofia Globe, in the 240-seat National Assembly, the vote was 134 in favour, 26 against, with no abstentions. In particular, the pro-Kremlin Vuzrazhdane party voted against the resolution, while those few Bulgarian Socialist Party MPs present in the House did not vote.

The Bulgarian Parliament’s decision declared that every final Saturday of November will be a Day of Honour and Remembrance for the victims of the Holodomor.

According to the resolution, any denial, justification and belittling of the genocide is a dishonour to the memory of the millions of people who died in the Holodomor.

In the course of debate, several MPs who spoke in favour of adopting the resolution referred to atrocities in Russia’s current war in Ukraine.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the Parliament of Bulgaria for recognizing the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

“I am thankful to the Bulgarian Parliament for recognizing the 1932-1933 Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. This step commemorates millions of Holodomor victims and restores historical justice. Bulgaria’s gesture of solidarity will always be remembered in Ukraine,” Zelensky wrote on Twitter.

As reported, on November 28, 2006, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Law "On the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine", which recognized the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

On December 15, 2022, the European Parliament adopted by a majority of votes a resolution on the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor in Ukraine, which recognizes the terrible events of the 1930s as the genocide of the Ukrainian people.

As of December 2022, 23 countries officially recognized the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people.
