CBP Sets Up Additional Checkpoints at Canadian Border

May 2025

Additional US Checkpoints Before Canadian Customs at Border

US Customs and Border Protection has set up extra checkpoints between the US and Metro Vancouver. Those heading from the US into Canada at the Peace Arch and Pacific Highway crossings are now being stopped by US border patrol before they proceed through Canadian customs, adding hours to crossing times.

Reports say US border patrol officers were inspecting the trunk and backseats of every fourth vehicle. Some report that officers are employing sniffer dogs to inspect vehicles. Border patrol states that they routinely conduct inspections on vehicles heading out of the country to arrest “wanted individuals” or seize “contraband.” However, those familiar with the border claim that US border patrol setting up checkpoints before Canadian customs only occur in emergency situations.

An Escalation in US-Canada Border Enforcement

Having permanent US checkpoints such as these marks an escalation in border enforcement at the US-Canadian border.

These checkpoints are another point where noncitizens could be subjected to racial profiling, violations of their due process rights, and potentially arbitrary detention.

This escalation is especially concerning in the wake of Trump’s militarization and sealing of the US-Mexico border and begs the question of whether further militarization is in store for the northern border.
