Cuba accuses US of genocide, violating international law
Havana alleges Washington is using economic, political pressure to influence member states

ISTANBUL
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez accused the US of committing genocide against Cuba and violating international law at a news conference on Wednesday in Havana.
“A military, nuclear, economic and technological superpower is committing an atrocious and ongoing act of abuse against a peaceful, peace-loving nation,” said Rodriguez.
He also accused Washington of threatening UN member states to influence an upcoming vote on a resolution calling for an end to the decades-long US embargo against his island.
Cuba had exposed “brutal pressure and threats” against countries ahead of the vote, Rodriguez said in a post on US social media company X.
He said the alleged measures included punitive tariffs, suspending cooperation programs, denying visas to government officials and their relatives, and supporting opposition forces in upcoming elections.
Washington also circulated threatening documents among governments and their UN delegations, said Rodriguez.
He added that US officials proposed that some countries abstain or stay away from the vote if they were unwilling to vote against Cuba.
Rodriguez called the alleged pressure campaign “a novel and dangerous way of conducting multilateral diplomacy.” He warned that an international order imposed through military force would be unsustainable.
The dispute also follows a US-hosted “Cuba Libre” panel at UN headquarters in New York on Monday. Cuban dissidents and former prisoners discussed alleged human rights abuses on the island.
US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz urged countries to oppose the resolution. Cuban Ambassador Ernesto Soberon Guzman condemned the event and accused Washington of imposing collective punishment on the Cuban people.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel also denounced the alleged US pressure campaign in a post by the Communist Party of Cuba on X.
He criticized the appearance of Orlando Gutierrez Boronat, whom he described as a “known terrorist and fraudster.”
The UN General Assembly is scheduled to vote on a non-binding resolution calling for an end to the embargo on Oct. 27-28.
The US said its Cuba policy promotes democracy and human rights. Lifting the embargo requires congressional approval.
